The first night in a new flat is mostly boxes in the hallway and one lamp working. Everyone brings a candle, which is thoughtful and gets regifted within the year. Here is the alternative.
Give something that has a place already
The best housewarming gift is one that has an obvious home — ideally the shelf by the door, which is the first surface a new flat has. Something that stands on it and does not need to be plugged in, watered, or explained.
What to write on the card
Not “congratulations on the new place”. Write the thing you actually noticed: for the shelf by the door, where your keys keep landing. A gift with a location in it stops being an object and becomes part of the house.
Match the person, not the interior
You will be tempted to match their sofa. Do not. Match the person — the colour they always wear, the sign they were born under. Objects that match the owner survive redecorations; objects that match a sofa get replaced with the sofa.
What we would send
A crystal tree in their sign’s colour, or a guardian stone pair. Both come with a card you can write on yourself.
One honest note: natural crystal carries veining and colour shifts, so no two are identical. If they like things perfectly uniform, they may prefer glass — and that is a real difference worth knowing before you spend the money.
